Nepal Bans Major Social Media Platforms Over Non-Compliance

Published by SATYA IT SOLUTION | September 5, 2025

The Government of Nepal has taken a bold step in regulating the digital space by blocking access to several major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and LinkedIn. The move, effective from September 4, 2025, follows a government directive requiring all social media companies operating in Nepal to officially register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Why the Ban?

According to officials, platforms that failed to:

  • Register locally,
  • Appoint a liaison officer in Nepal,
  • Provide a grievance redressal mechanism, and
  • Commit to self-regulation,

have been restricted from operating in the country.

The government argues this regulation is crucial to curb cybercrime, misinformation, fake identities, and online threats to social harmony.

Who Is Still Operating?

While around 26 platforms are banned, some popular apps like TikTok, Viber, WeTalk, Nimbuzz, and Poppo Live remain accessible, as they complied with the registration requirements. Telegram and Global Diary are currently under review.

Mixed Reactions

Public Concern: Digital rights groups, businesses, and students have raised alarms about restrictions on freedom of expression, communication barriers, and disruption to online businesses. Many argue the ban could impact Nepal’s economy, especially small enterprises and digital creators who rely on these platforms.

Government View: Authorities emphasize this move ensures accountability and creates a safer digital environment.
